whiting
1) a common name for several species of fishes, e.g. Semotilus corporalis (Cyprinidae), Merluccius bilinearis (Merlucciidae), Theragra chalcogramma (Gadidae)
2) precipitation of calcium carbonate in hard water lakes during early summer. Chalky white clouds form and calcium carbonate rains down on the lake bed, consolidating to form marl in some cases. Temperature-dependent reduction in carbonate solubility and a seasonal change in pH related phytoplankton growth are cited as the causes. Whitings are visible on satellite images of the North American Great Lakes
